{"id":568,"date":"2018-11-12T12:35:15","date_gmt":"2018-11-12T12:35:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/urras-an-eilein.scot\/?p=568"},"modified":"2019-11-19T15:03:32","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T15:03:32","slug":"sir-iain-noble-memorial-lecture-young-person-of-the-year-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/urras-an-eilein.scot\/en\/2018\/11\/sir-iain-noble-memorial-lecture-young-person-of-the-year-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Sir Iain Noble Memorial Lecture &#038; Young Person of the Year 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<!--themify_builder_content-->\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-568\" data-postid=\"568\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-568 themify_builder tf_clear\">\n                    <div  data-lazy=\"1\" class=\"module_row themify_builder_row tb_ecch155 tb_first tf_w\">\n                        <div class=\"row_inner col_align_top tb_col_count_1 tf_box tf_rel\">\n                        <div  data-lazy=\"1\" class=\"module_column tb-column col-full tb_ms7c156 first\">\n                    <!-- module text -->\n<div  class=\"module module-text tb_m1xz157   \" data-lazy=\"1\">\n        <div  class=\"tb_text_wrap\">\n        <p>The seventh Sir Iain Noble Memorial Lecture was delivered by <strong>Murdo Beaton<\/strong> of the Isle of Skye, on Thursday 11 October at Sabhal M\u00f2r Ostaig where he gave a moving lecture entitled, \u201cAnn an l\u00e0rach coise nan Gaisgeach\u201d (In the Footsteps of Heroes).<\/p>\n<p>Urras an Eilein, in which Murdo is involved, organised four trips to France to visit the graveyards of the First World War and to hold remembrance services, in Gaelic, on the sites where the Gaels had been.\u00a0 They also visited St Valery-en-Caux where the Highland regiments were captured in May 1940, and which left many as prisoners of war in Germany and Poland for five years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smo.uhi.ac.uk\/images\/uploads\/Oraid-2018-Iain-Noble.jpg\" \/>Sabhal M\u00f2r Ostaig Principal, Dr Gillian Rothach said: \u201cWe are very honoured to work with Urras an Eilein and Fearann Eilean Iarmain to commemorate Sir Iain\u2019s Gaelic legacy.<\/p>\n<p>It is a particular honour that the lecture this year was given by Murdo Beaton, who knew Sir Iain so well and who worked with him and with others, over the years, to establish and develop the Trust, to benefit Gaelic in Skye.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his lecture, Murdo gave us a powerful account of the recent commemorations in France, given in Gaelic, by a group of Skye men and women, of the individuals from our island communities who sacrificed their lives for their families, communities and country. We are proud that, with this lecture in Sir Iain\u2019s memory, we have been able to remember our island heroes and heroines, and their part in bringing about the end of the First World War\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking personally about the subject matter of the lecture, Murdo said:\u00a0 \u201cThe poignancy of the memorial services and the stark realisation of the terrible events we were commemorating will remain with those who were on the tours for the rest of their lives.\u00a0 The sadness of these events cannot be put into words.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As part of the evening\u2019s proceedings, the second \u201cSkye\u2019s Young Gaelic Person of the Year\u201d award was presented and this year went to Alasdair MacDonald of Kilmoluag.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.smo.uhi.ac.uk\/images\/uploads\/Press2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>On receiving the award he commented:\u00a0 \u201cI didn\u2019t expect to receive this award at all.\u00a0 I\u2019m delighted that I was nominated and it\u2019s great to have an award such as this, which encourages young Gaelic speakers to be proud of their language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The evening came to a close with a tune on the pipes, played by Dr Angus MacDonald, Glen Uig, which he composed after having visited France with Urras an Eilein.<\/p>\n<p>The annual lecture was started by Sabhal M\u00f2r Ostaig and Urras an Eilein (Skye Gaelic Trust) \u2013 two organisations which Sir Iain helped to establish and with which he enjoyed enduring ties during his lifetime \u2013 to honour the work and achievements of Sir Iain, especially with regard to the College, the island and the Gaelic language.<\/p>    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- \/module text -->        <\/div>\n                        <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n<!--\/themify_builder_content-->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The seventh Sir Iain Noble Memorial Lecture was delivered by Murdo Beaton of the Isle of Skye, on Thursday 11 October at Sabhal M\u00f2r Ostaig where he gave a moving lecture entitled, \u201cAnn an l\u00e0rach coise nan Gaisgeach\u201d (In the Footsteps of Heroes).
