Trust History<\/span><\/h2>

Urras an Eilein<\/strong> was established in 1973 by the late Sir Iain Noble<\/strong>,\u00a0 the late Donald MacMillan<\/strong> of Portree and Donald John MacLennan<\/strong> of Broadford, with the aim of promoting Gaelic language activities and projects on Skye focusing on Skye’s education, heritage, history and culture.<\/span><\/p>

Although originally just \u00a31000<\/strong>, over the years, the Trust’s value has increased to over \u00a3 250,000<\/strong> giving us an income of around \u00a38000<\/strong> a year.<\/span><\/p><\/div> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Projects to Date<\/span><\/h2>

In recent years the Trust has supported a number of projects and events such as ceilidhs, drama, a film about Sorley MacLean, the Skye Provincial Mod, Glasgow Skye Association, a large ceilidh in Dunvegan to honour Kenna Campbell and so on.<\/span><\/p>

In the field of education, Gaelic playgroups, Gaelic medium primary schools, Portree High School and the Glasgow Gaelic school have all received a number of grants for innovative projects, prizes, libraries and other Gaelic education issues.<\/span><\/p>

In memory of the heroes of the First World War the Trust has organized a series of visits to France and Belgium, with Gaelic services held in the cemeteries where many Highland soldiers are stationed.<\/span><\/p>

The Urras, in conjunction with Sabhal M\u00f2r Ostaig<\/a>, sponsor the annual Sir Iain Noble Memorial Lecture<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n
